Tirunelveli has a population figure of 4, 11,831 as per 2001 census, recording an increase of 27.94% over 1991 population. The city has recorded a low growth rate of 10.42% during the decade 1981-91. 2.5.2 Population Density

The Tirunelveli City spreads over an area of 108.65 sq.km. The fross population density of the Corporation had increased to 3781 persons per sq.km in 2001 from2218 Persons per sq.km in1971.

Thachanalllur: Highest Population density of 229 persons per Hectare and highest residential density of 85 dwelling unitys per Hectare are found in the ward No. 7

Palayam kottai: Ward No.22 and 23 have highest population density of 348 PPH and residential density of 8 dwelling units per hectare.

Melapalayam: Highest population density of 1180 PPh and residential density of 207 Dwelling units per Hectare are found in ward No.36

Tirunelveli: Ward No.53 contains the highest population density of 529 PPh and highest residential density of 114 Dwelling unitys per Hectare.

2.5.4 Sex Ratio

There are1024 Females for every 1000 males in Tirunelveli Corporation in the year 2002, which is higher than the state average of 986 females for every 1000 males and lesser than the district average of 1042.
